Logging company goes beyond

Hats off to Western Forest Products and volunteers who took part in this project

This article is about industry, a local ATV club and other user groups co-operating in the outdoors. A brief description of the trails impacted follows.

1) Conchee Trail is partly old railway grade from the early 1900s and newer (1950–1990) additions; most had been abandoned for years. The Wednesday ATV Trail Group has been maintaining this system for five years.

2) Hastings Trail is again part old railway grade, cedar shake cutting roads, old logging road and new portions constructed by the Wednesday ATV Trail Group. This was opened up in 2004 and again has been maintained by this group.

A brief history will explain the importance of these trails. During the winter months these trails become very active as they are at times one of the few trails that connect the Powell River area to the Lois main system due to snow levels.

During the last few months, Western Forest Products has been building a new road that intersects these two very popular and heavily used recreation trails. Western Forest Products representative Stuart Glen has been very understanding about the issues that this construction would have on the local Powell River ATV Club and other users. Many meetings and onsite inspections were held and an agreed upon plan was accepted.

Work started in November 2007. First was the posting of the Hastings Trail and therefore its closure due to construction and blasting. Later both trails had to be closed for safety reasons. At all times during this phase, Western Forest Products was very understanding and responsive to these closures.

In early March, an inspection showed that there were two transitions from the Hastings Trail that needed to be resolved prior to completion. Western had already agreed to do the work, therefore only a meeting needed to be held to discuss the best option for all. It was determined that they would groom the lower portion up to the new road, then divert the trail onto their new road system for a short distance, and then re-hook back up to the trail. This was agreed upon as the upper section of the ditch and high bank posed an issue to hook up to the original trail.

On April 24th we were notified it was complete and traffic was again allowed. The crew travelled up the Hastings to inspect this crossing as well as to re-open these trails. Surprise, surprise! Western, through its contractor 3 Leaf Contracting, had not only regroomed the lower side as agreed, but they had also reconnected the trail across the steep ditch, installing a large culvert and grooming the upper bank. This now kept us on our old trail instead of diverting us onto the new road. This showed to us their commitment to recreation and public input.
Western Forest Products is a forest company that takes note of the public’s concerns in their operational plans as well as requesting public input prior to logging.

Through Western Forest Products’ CSA certification, the company has registered these trails and many more for the future use of everyone. If all other groups would do this as well, it would serve us all.
