The backwoods beckon
Marvin McCrae and his fellow Mud Dawgs are ready to ride
Getting downright dirty and messy in the rolling foothills and mud pits around Pouce Coupe and Dawson Creek is what the members of the Mud Dawgs A.T.V. Club love to do. Featuring sprawling terrain and views of mountains in the distance, the region is perfect for ATVing, according to Marvin McCrae, a member of the Mud Dawgs A.T.V. Club.

“We are blessed in our area here because it is so wide open—we can kind of ride where we want at will,” McCrae said. “We have so much open country here, when I go for a ride I just open the garage door and take off.”
McCrae discovered his love for quadding when his children were younger, and ATVing time quickly became cherished family time. Now that McCrae’s children are older, his favourite people to go quadding with are still his family and friends.
“When I first got the quads a number of years ago, my kids were younger and it was something we could do as a family unit,” McCrae said. “Then we got riding with other people and we all had fun. We have a wiener roast and go out for a ride and enjoy the day—it is very social.”
The Mud Dawgs A.T.V. Club was founded by Myrna and Joe Nodes in 2001 because there was a bylaw in place prohibiting people from riding their ATVs across town to fuel up and to reach the trails. McCrae said the Nodeses succeeded in changing the bylaw, but due to excessive quad riding throughout the town, the restriction is in place again.
“At one time we could drive into town and fuel up,” McCrae said, “but there were so many quads around that everyone was riding all over the place at all hours of the night and it just got blown away.”
But at least the club has survived. The Mud Dawgs have been a club for seven years, but McCrae is concerned about the decline in membership over the last couple of years.
“We are in a bust and boom kind of area and we are in a boom right now, so a lot of people do not have a lot of time to put into the club as we did before,” he said. “All the work out here is oilpatch and none of the work is out of home. Most of the members are working out in camps and they are gone.”
Despite the club’s challenges, McCrae and the other members of the Mud Dawgs are looking forward to April when the snow melts, so they can get out into nature and kick up some dirt and mud.
“We ride in the backwoods and do lots of mud riding—that seems to be the favourite up here,” said McCrae.
