The ATV derby promises big fun
One of Manitoba’s favourite quadding events, the St. Jean ATV Derby, will be taking place September 20 and 21—participants will be treated to two days of full-throttle family fun.

“It’s definitely the biggest (derby) in Manitoba,” said organizer Kevin Klaassen. “This will be our seventh year. The first year we started out with about 60 machines and (it was) very loosely organized.”
The event has grown since then: last year, more than 800 riders registered for the derby, 1,100 riders participated and almost 1,500 people attended.
St. Jean Baptiste has over 50 kilometres of beautifully maintained trails that run alongside the Red River. The trails are popular any time of year, but the area really comes into its own during the derby weekend.
Saturday’s events will revolve around the poker derby, which will be followed by a barbecue and live entertainment. The obstacle course and controlled drag races take place on Sunday. The fundraising derby will be donating proceeds to the St. Jean Volunteer Fire Department and the local arena for ongoing renovations.
“It’s a good mix for everybody,” said Klaassen. “Ours is a family-oriented derby. If you want to bring the little kids on the back of the machine, it’s safe for that. It’s really well controlled.”
