Revved-up riding
Courtenay rider Coleton McLean dominated the podium at Round 2 of the CMRC Vancouver Island Fall Series
When you have a great looking track and great looking motocross bikes all in one location it can only mean one thing at this time of the year: the Canadian Motosport Racing Club (CMRC) Vancouver Island Fall Series must be happening. That is what took place September 14, 2008, at the Wastelands track in Nanaimo, B.C. The Nanaimo club did a great job of preparing the track for the event as well as requesting and receiving some great weather for it.
Campbell River rider Ed Allen made the trek down early in the morning for the event and made the most of the trip by making the podium in both of the classes he rode in. In the Vet Junior class, Allen edged out Nanaimo club rider Bryon Whitcomb for first place overall. Third place for the day went to Merville rider Paul Wilkinson.
Allen also had a good ride in the Plus 40 class. He came home with third overall for the day. Maurice Vanderbash of Victoria and Chris Stokes of Shawnigan Lake were going at it bar to bar to see who would be champion on this day. It was Stokes who took that title this day and Vanderbash had to settle for second best this time out.
What a great weekend for Coleton McLean of Courtenay. He was just tearing up the Wastelands this weekend in both his classes. He and his Suzuki were dialled in to perfection for the track. He went home with top place in both the Youth class and the GP Pro class. It was Ross Sherman of Saanichton who took second place in the Youth class. It was not easy as he had Nick Syrotuck of Nanoose Bay to contend with. They battled for second place and in the end it was Sherman who finished second and Syrotuck third.
In the GP Pro class, McLean had a bad start in the morning moto as he and Campbell River rider Andrew Belin got tangled up at the start. McLean had to hold on to his bike as he had a hand full of throttle and picked off each rider until all that was left to see was the checkered flag. Belin left the track but was back to challenge McLean for the lead in the afternoon moto. He gave it his all but he crossed the finish line behind McLean. McLean finished the day in first place while Eric Wickman, also of Courtenay, finished the day out in second overall. Sherman took home third place overall.
Carter Pugh had a good day on his home track with his Yamaha. He finished the day out in first place overall in the MX2 Junior class. He beat out Cory Cardinal of Crofton who finished the day in second place overall. Third place overall went to Powell River with Erik Forrest.
Cardinal was riding in the Supermini class and took home first place overall in it as well as first place in the 85cc 7-11 class. It was Jordan Piccolo of Parksville who placed second in the Supermini while Jeremiah Sims of Nanaimo placed third. In the 855cc class it was Blain Morrow of Black Creek who was edged out of top place by Cardinal and had to settle for second best this outing. Third place went to Saltspring Island with Wesley Pickering.
In the Ladies class, the rider to try and catch was Camille Backer of Nanaimo. She took home first place. She was being chased down by Amy Aspell of Port Alberni who had to settle for second place. Taylor Lessor of Powell River made the most of her trip to the Wastelands and went home with third place overall.
There were some tense moments at the start of the afternoon moto in the Ladies class as Tamara Hill of Nanaimo and Lindsey McLean of Campbell River got tangled up. Best of luck to both of you and hope to see both of you at the track soon.
