The CMRC Vancouver Island Fall Series got underway on August 30
What a way to start round one of the Canadian Motosport Racing Club (CMRC) Vancouver Island Fall Series. The series started in Campbell River, B.C., on Saturday, August 30, 2008, with a riding school put on by two of the top pro riders on Vancouver Island—Darcy Lange, who is a three-time AMA winner in the U.S. as well as a top-ranked pro rider in Canada, and Coleton McLean, who is also a pro rider here in Canada and just came off the CMRC Canadian Pro Nationals. On Sunday, there were nine podium finishes for the Campbell River club. Not a bad day of riding for all the club members who were able to attend the race, as there were close to 200 signups for the event.

One of the big highlights of the day was a new helmet giveaway. This helmet was donated to the club by Pacific Coast Powersports of Courtenay. The helmet was given away at the lunch break and all small kids that raced were to bring their helmet up to the signup tower where Erica Spizawaka and I were to determine who would best suit this new helmet. There were several who could benefit with this new helmet and it was tough till we got to a little 50cc rider, seven-year-old Jordan Higgins of Port Alberni. This was a special little girl we found out. After talking to her it was determined by both Erica and I, along with the crowd of riders and parents, that she deserved this new helmet. This little girl was riding her first ever motocross race. As well, Jordan raised a lot of money for the Cops for Cancer Bike Tour by having her hair cut and donated.
I later met up with Jordan and asked her how her new helmet fit and if she was going to wear it in the afternoon moto. She was not going to as she gave it to another deserving little girl who did not have one when she went riding with her family—that person is Brooklyn. Her little sister benefitted from her generosity. Jordan, you are a very special little girl.
Race day started out with the Vet Master and Vet Junior races. In the Vet Junior moto, it was Campbell River club rider Isael Poulin who used his home track advantage to roar out to the front of the pack and hold the lead to the checkered flag for first overall for the day. Second overall went to Courtenay rider David Mout while third overall went to Campbell River rider Ed Allen.
Allen used his home track advantage to take first place overall in the 40 Plus class. Second overall went to David Alsop of Powell River while third went to Shawnigan Lake with Erik Egeland.
Poulin was also riding in the MX1 Junior class this weekend and went home with third overall for his riding. Second place went to Duncan with Justin Lundstrom. Tyler Peterson of Qualicum Beach was the rider they were both chasing down but they ran out of time as the checkered flag come out and he went home with first overall.
Monkey Butt Racing was on hand this weekend with riders in the Vet Master class. Paul Gallagher of Shawnigan Lake was one of them and he pulled off a win in the second moto over Mike Richards of Victoria to take home first place overall. Third place overall went to David Cottle of Ladysmith.
It was a great race in the 50cc 4-6 class. Colby Egeland of Shawnigan Lake made the best of his trip up Island for the race. He got the hole shot and win in both motos over local rider Michael Masters who finished the day in second overall. Third place went to Saltspring Island with David Bradley.
There must be something in the air over on Saltspring Island as it was a real battle for top place in the 50cc 7-8 class as three of the riders from there were in a battle for it. It was Austin Archer who took the overall win of the day. Brandon Johnson was battling with Wyatt Scheres in the second moto. It was Johnson who just edged out Scheres for second place. That was enough to give Johnson second overall for the day while Scheres took third overall.
In the MX2 class there was some high-flying action taking place as each rider was out there giving all they had for the huge crowd on hand. The crowd was not disappointed at all. When the checkered flag came out it was Nanoose Bay rider Nick Syrotuck who went home with overall win of the day. Second overall went to Saanichton rider Ross Sherman. It was a good day of racing for Bryce Adams of Powell River. This was his first race in this class and he went home with third overall for the day.
Cory Cardinal of Crofton was here this weekend fresh off his third place finish from Walton, Ontario, where the Amateur Nationals were held. He was out there in the MX2 Junior class this weekend. He was the rider to catch out there. Not one rider could do so this weekend so Cardinal went away with first overall. Second place overall went to Powell River with Reid Fuller while Port Alberni rider Tyler Cox took home third overall.
Cardinal was also riding in the 85cc 7-11 class. He was out there riding hard and flying high. He went away with first overall. Second place overall went to Nanaimo rider Lloyd Hills and third place overall went to Blain Morrow of Black Creek.
There was great race action in both the Youth class and the GP Pro class. In the Youth class, both Syrotuck and Sherman gave chase to Courtenay rider Coleton McLean who was hard on the throttle and not holding anything back after having his rear tire slide out making him take a little Campbell River dirt back home with him. It did not take McLean long to gain the lead and hold off the pack after picking them off one by one until he was out in the lead. McLean went home with first overall along with all of the dirt from the track. Syrotuck had to settle for second and Sherman third.
Both Sherman and Syrotuck went back out there in the GP Pro to try and spoil the home track advantage on McLean but to no avail. They finished second and third behind McLean once again. It was Syrotuck who outrode Sherman again.
The Ladies class was a great moto to watch as there was some real hard riding out there from each and every rider. It was Taylor Lessor of Powell River who grabbed a fist full of throttle and held on until the checkered flag came out. She took home first overall while Kayla Peffers of Port Alberni took home second overall. Third place went to Campbell River rider Lindsey McLean who was out there on her new Yamaha.
All in all it was a great weekend of motocross racing here in Campbell River, and there was great weather for it. Best of luck to two riders who went down rather hard and could not continue. I hope both of you are up and ready for round two in Nanaimo. Good luck Jamie Nagy and Tanner Cardinal—I hope you have a speedy recovery.
