The Campbell River Motocross Association in Campbell River, B.C., held a Wednesday Evening Racing Series at the club’s local track during the month of July 2012 for all who wished to try out motocross racing for the first time—or for those who have been doing it and just wanted to keep fresh and get a little practice in.

The whole idea of the races was to attract some new riders to the sport. There were riders from up and down Vancouver Island that showed up for them. Many were first-time racers who wanted to try the sport out. Several were riders who had been trail riding and decided, “hey, why not try out motocross racing as well?” Some wanted to see what the sport was all about, and others just wanted to come and have a little fun and see if they could keep up to the riders who have been doing it for some time.

There were only a few classes in the series because in order to have three motos in the evening, each class had to operate on a real tight time frame. The riders were given two five-lap motos and one four-lap moto on a shortened track.

Heel clickers, tail whips and full-throttle racing

There were some great races that took place during the series. Some of the riders gave it their best as they went bar to bar and wheel to wheel with full-throttle racing. Jeff Banks of Campbell River was on hand to thrill the crowd with some high-flying tail whips, and he also threw in a few heel clickers as well. Ryan Lalonde, who is from Victoria, B.C., threw the bike around with some great-looking tail whips and he railed the burms.

Some great race action took place between Dean Tipper of Campbell River and Courtenay rider Isael Poulin. These two riders gave 100 per cent each and every moto throughout the series. That was after they groomed and watered the track before each race to make sure everyone had a good time.

Ryder Roth of Campbell River was very fast in the 50-cc class. He came away with a perfect record and he was undefeated throughout the entire series. Michael Masters of Campbell River had a great series as well, and he delivered some high-flying action for spectators—getting seven of nine possible hole shots throughout the series.

Speaking of hole shots, prizes were awarded to riders who were the first through it in each class. These prizes were supplied by the good folks at Boardwalk skateboard store in Campbell River. Many thanks to them for the great hole-shot awards for the riders.

Sparking new and renewed interest in the sport

Some of the new riders seemed to really enjoy the series, like Gavin Monk of Campbell River. He really tried his best to make the podium. I’m not sure who got a better workout, though—Gavin on the bike or his dad, Derek, who kept running around the track to make sure Gavin stayed upright and made it up all the hills.

Lain Grant of Quadra Island, B.C., came over for some of the races and he competed in the super mini class. He really seemed to have a great time out there on the track. For being a new rider in the sport, Lain seemed to fit right in. He took most of the jumps with ease and could also round the corners nicely.

Garret McAlinden of Nanaimo, B.C., came out for one of the rounds—and he rode well. It had been several years since the last time he rode in a motocross race. But it didn’t look like any rust had set in as Garret rode great and he flew high over the tabletops with ease.

Come again

All in all, it was a great series for all of the riders who came out for it. It was a great way for them to get into the sport. Licence fees were not required, and it was inexpensive to enter the races. Now that they know what it is like to compete against other riders on a motocross track, maybe we will see them out at other races in the near future—be it here at the local track in Campbell River or at one of the other tracks on Vancouver Island.

If any riders would like to come out and try the sport once again, the next sanctioned race to be held in Campbell River at the local track is slated for August 26, 2012, with a practice day to be held on August 25.
