In 2007, Can-Am introduced its Spyder Roadster to the motorcycle world, and like any new concept vehicle, it received mixed reviews. Some loved it and others hated it. But after seven years on the market, it’s safe to say the Spyder is here to stay.
Now, Can-Am offers three distinct versions of the Spyder; for 2014, it was the Spyder RT that received the most significant upgrades.
For starters, it’s got a bigger engine. The 998 cc Rotax V-twin that powered the Spyder RT last year has been replaced with a 1330 cc Advanced Combustion Efficiency (ACE) in-line three-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine with electronic fuel injection and electronic throttle control. Advantages of the new engine include high torque response in every gear, 40 per cent more low-end torque and better fuel economy.
The Spyder RT also benefits from a new six-speed transmission, which comes in a manual or semi-automatic version. Both come with reverse, and the clutchless semi-automatic version means riders can shift gears using a paddle shifter—much like a sports car.
Then there are the style and comfort features. The 2014 Spyder RT has a new front design, as well as low-profile tires on 12-spoke wheels and a redesigned heat management system. It also has more storage, a four-speaker audio system and a new touring saddle with lumbar support.
The 2014 Spyder RT is available in three packages: RT, RT-S and RT Limited.
