As a fan of Sena Bluetooth headsets, I was excited to hear about the company’s new 20S Motorcycle Bluetooth Communication System. Building upon the functions of its best-selling SMH10 model, Sena’s 20S comes with some new and very cool features.
Audio multitasking is one of them. This technology allows users to have a conversation and listen to music, radio or GPS instructions simultaneously. The audio volume automatically lowers when a conversation takes place and then returns to normal volume when the conversation is over.
Then there’s the new voice command system. No longer do riders have to take their hands off the bars to communicate with each other, turn up the volume or skip to the next music track. They just say “Next” or “Intercom one, two, three, etc.” and the headset acts accordingly.
Like the SMH10 and models before it, the new 20S can be paired with a smartphone, but pairing devices and other headsets with the 20S is easier and quicker, thanks to motion sensor technology. According to Sena, all it takes is a simple shake of the unit and pairing is done.
Probably the most practical feature, though, is the intercom range of the 20S. In open terrain, it has a working distance of up to two kilometres (2,000 metres). That’s a vast improvement over the SMH10’s 900-metre range.
With the 20S, riders can communicate with up to eight riders, and it’s universal, too. The 20S will work with all other brands of headsets on the market.
Sena makes sure its products are upgradeable too, so even though the 20S comes with Bluetooth 4.0—which isn’t the very latest version of Bluetooth—users can expect a firmware upgrade for the 20S to come out in the near future. A release date has not been given yet.
