The 2014 Dakar Rally came to a standstill on Saturday as racers had reached the halfway point. The day was spent testing, tuning and recharging the batteries, so to speak. Racers also took time to celebrate their sub-victory of reaching rest day.
In the bike class, it was Red Bull/KTM racer Marc Coma who was first in the overall standings, followed by Honda’s Joan Barreda in second and Sherco rider Alain Duclos in third. Racing continued on Sunday and by the end of the day, both Coma and Barreda had held on to their positions but Duclos was overtaken by KTM rider Jordi Viladoms in third.
Competitors are now in Stage 8 of the rally; today, they will be racing across the world’s largest salt flat, the Salar de Uyuni, toward Calama, Chile. Only time will tell if Coma will be able to hold on to the top spot for six more days.
