Corner Grass Racing Team’s Victoria Hett has been busy pounding the race courses the past few weeks. On April 26, 2013, the Greater Kamloops Motorcycle Association held its annual Big Kahuna off-road event—which is a unique event where much of the national motocross track is used in conjunction with five to six kilometres of typical off-road terrain.
Following a poor start out of the motocross gate, Hett battled through blinding dust in midpack of the intermediate class. A challenging endurocross course was built by the club to give spectators great action and this is where she was able to make time on the class. Going into the event with a goal of a top 10 amongst a majority of motocrossers in her class, Hett was able to finish in a valiant fifth place after two and a half hours.
Next on Hett’s agenda was the first round of the AMA Geico EnduroCross in Las Vegas. Having never competed in one of these events, she had her work cut out for her. Hett wisely chose to practise in the rougher lines, leaving the smoother, more travelled lines for the main events. She qualified into the evening program with ease, with a second in her heat.
Hett’s main event didn’t go as well as her heat, as a pileup that included 2012 Champion Maria Forsberg held Hett up. Pushing hard to the finish, utilizing her practise lines, Hett managed to work her way into sixth place.
“I felt really strong to the finish,” said Hett, after the event. “My start and the pileup wasn’t good but I had fun and I learned a lot, so all is not lost.”
