The original brainchild of Jay McGregor and Nick Riewe—the Corner Grass concept of off-road—has seen a rebirth with the great efforts of David French and his merry marauders of the Brooks Motorcycle Club (BMC), in Brooks, Alberta.
After gaining access to an extra 100 acres of land, French and the BMC constructed an endurocross course and a grass track to complement the existing motocross track. This type of racing is extremely popular as the small confines of the property allow spectators to watch much of the racing with minimal movement.
The event, which took place in June 2014, was a great success. The original members of the Corner Grass Racing Team (CGRT) were on hand to reminisce and partake in the events. They were impressed with the hard work and vision of David, Evelyn, Ryley, Troy and the rest of the crew.
On the racing side of this story, the format is slightly different at Corner Grass, where A and B classes race separately and each races two one-hour motos. This sprint style of racing adds intensity and is great fun to watch.
Some things never change, as the elder statesman of Alberta’s off-road racing scene again claimed a podium position. But it was not easy as the younger generation of talent is coming strong, and we like that!
CGRT’s Shane Cuthbertson of Airdrie, Alberta, bagged a second overall on the day, wringing the guts out of his Husqvarna Canada/A&E Racing-backed TE 300.
Ryan Linderman of Hillcrest Mines, Alberta, had a strong ride, making the switch for 2014 to a four-stroke Husqvarna FC 250. His seventh place finish is not indicative of his smooth style, strength and aggression.
It was a great weekend, and a thank you goes out to the BMC and crew.
