An interesting press release popped into my email inbox this week about the Gumball 3000. If you’ve heard of this event before, I’m impressed. It’s a 3,000-mile international road rally and it takes place annually at different locations around the world. This year is the 15th anniversary Gumball 3000 rally and it begins in Copenhagen in the small country of Denmark.

Only 100 cars are allowed in the rally but they are some of the most exotic, luxurious, conceptual—I’d have to dig out my thesaurus to keep going—vehicles you’ve ever seen. Ferraris, Aston Martins, Lamborghinis, Rolls Royces, Mercedes, you name it, they’re all here, and behind the wheels of these vehicles are some big-name musicians, actors and actresses and TV stars, as well as sheikhs, princes and CEOs.

What brings such an elite crowd together? Raising money for the Gumball 3000 Foundation, which is a non-profit organization that was established to benefit underprivileged youth through education, infrastructure and environmental projects.

Teams participating in the Gumball 3000 rally raise money for the foundation through donations. For this year, the team that raises the most money will get the best position at the starting line.

On May 18, 2013, rally-goers will set off from Copenhagen and drive for six days, passing through 13 countries on their way to Monte Carlo on the French Riviera.

For those who won’t have the chance to see the infamous “stars and cars” rally roll through town, there will be live coverage streamed daily on the Gumball 3000 website
