At Rocky Top ATV Park, owners Kelly and Jana Spiker have turned 160 acres of private land into a playground where ATVers can ride and spend time with friends and family members.

Rocky Top ATV Park—which is located approximately 50 kilometres north of Westlock in Jarvie, Alberta—features 27 kilometres of marked trails. According to Kelly, terrain choices in the park range from areas for casual ATVing to places suited to more technical riding. For the kids at Rocky Top ATV Park, the Spikers have built a playground and a racetrack, as well as a trout pond where youngsters can try out their fishing skills. As well, there are 36 spacious campsites, 10 of which offer full-service hookups.

A busy year ahead

Rocky Top ATV Park opens on May 1, and Kelly said that 2012 is going to be a busy year for them.

“I know we are going to be overfull for every long weekend this season,” said Kelly. “We have bookings right up into the September long weekend.”

Last year, the Spikers put the finishing touches on two 200-foot-long mud pits. On long weekends, the Spikers organized drag races for the park’s guests. In previous years, the couple have also hosted demo days with Bombardier Recreational Products and Polaris Industries; Kelly expects to see representatives from both manufacturers back again in 2012. This season, the Spikers will also be working on a motocross track for dirt bikers.

For the love of the sport

Kelly is an avid ATVer, and his 22-year-old stepson, Brandon, is passionate about the sport as well. Rocky Top ATV Park was started because Kelly and Brandon found themselves running out of places to ride their ATVs. In 2007, they began building trails on a piece of land that was owned by Kelly’s parents. Other ATVing enthusiasts became interested in their work, so the Spikers decided to purchase the land and share it with the public.

The Spikers spend countless hours in winter and summer to ensure the park is in top-notch shape for its guests. With both of them working full-time jobs, Kelly and Jana are busy people; for Kelly, however, spending his spare time gathering firewood or grooming trails at Rocky Top ATV Park is a vacation in itself.

“That’s where I spend my holidays,” he said.
