The B.C. government has introduced measures to restrict recreational use in the Tunkwa-Duffy area, with the aim of protecting sensitive grasslands and riparian ecosystems in the Thompson Rivers district.
Authorized under Section 58 of the Forest and Range Practices Act, Tunkwa, Six Mile and Cherry Creek will be closed to off-road recreational vehicles year-round beginning April 13 of this year.
The closure will not apply to snowmobiles operating on a minimum of 0.5 metres of snow, and Logan Lake ski trails remain closed to ORV riding.
ORV riding will still be permitted on approximately 85 km of trails northwest of Logan Lake on Forge Mountain, on 65 km of trails northeast of Logan Lake at Face-Paska, on 30 km of trails southwest of Logan Lake and on approximately 130 km of trails southwest of Kamloops currently recommended for motorcycle use.
There are staging areas available at each of these areas and these will remain available.
According to Recreation Sites and Trails BC, these closures will prevent further damage to the affected areas, including soil disturbance and the introduction of invasive weed species. The objective is to restore the grassland ecosystems.
Responsible riding and recreation will ensure the Tunkwa-Duffy area remains a popular tourist destination for future generations, said the Recreation Sites and Trails BC website.
