Otopasso Trails

One of Saskatchewan’s only all-sand tracks, the Otopasso trail system offers some of the best forest trail riding in central Saskatchewan, according to Saskatoon's Track N Trail motocross club president Curtis Hermanson.

Located approximately 20 kilometres south of Saskatoon on Highway 219, the Otopasso Trails consist of 150 acres of small trails and hills along with three motocross tracks.

“The best thing about Otopasso is that there is a little bit of everything,” said Hermanson, who has been riding in the area for 30 years and favours trail riding. “Whether you are a racer or just enjoy riding some trails for fun, we have something for everyone to enjoy. There are some fun hills to try to climb.”

To enhance riders’ experience of Otopasso, Hermanson said the club will be building an enduro-cross style of track this year and continuing its Wednesday night race series.

“Our Wednesday night race series is fun for the whole family,” he said. “We typically have about 100 racers in eight different race classes.”

He said race classes include oldtimer, or riders aged 30 or over, ladies, an 85 cc class and a 50/65 cc class.

“We head out every week from the beginning of May till the end of August,” he said. “We race mostly for bragging rights, but we do keep track of points and give out awards at the end of the season for the points series.”

Hermanson said that all riders—local or visiting—are welcome to “come out and see for yourself”.

Racing starts every Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. and attendance is free.

Track N Trail Nisbet Forest Ride Day

To give riders an opportunity to experience new areas in central Saskatchewan, the Track N Trail Saskatoon Motocross Club is launching a new event this spring called the Track and Trail Nisbet Forest Ride Day.
According to Hermanson, the idea for the event came as a result of “always getting asked where are some good places to ride.

“The ride day was an idea that our Track N Trail executive came up with this spring as an opportunity for our club to show people some new areas that are available to ride and guide them through it,” said Hermanson.

The event will take place June 29 at 11:00 a.m. in the Nisbet Provincial Forest, a mixed-wood forest surrounded by aspen parkland. The exact location will be posted on the club’s website, www.saskatoonmotocross.ca, along with a Google map link.

Hermanson said the event will be free for the entire family and will consist of two main trail loops, which will each be approximately 50 kilometres in length.

“I think this will be a great opportunity for our club to show people the trail system in Nisbet that we have been riding for many years now,” he said. “Our club is called Track N Trail, but over the last few years our emphasis has been more about the track. We are trying to change this and focus on all types of riding. This will be a great opportunity to broaden this focus and bring out some new riders as well.”

To register for the event, email Hermanson at [email protected] and mention the number of riders that are planning to attend.

Balzinor MX Park Outdoor Motocross Night

Hermanson added that there will be another new event launching this summer in central Saskatchewan: the Balzinor MX Park Outdoor Motocross Night.

According to organizer and self-described motocross enthusiast Steve Balzer, the two-day event will be a joint effort between himself and the Town of Langham Recreational Committee and will feature daytime motocross racing broken up with extreme jumping and freestyle motocross demonstrations on June 22 and 23.

Balzer said that in addition to bikes, the event will also feature bulls.

“In the evening at 8:00 p.m. we have a sanctioned PBR (Professional Bull Riders) bull riding event on site,” he said.

Balzer said racers can register on site at the Balzinore MX Park, located two kilometres south and two kilometres west of Langham, on June 22 between 6:00 and 8:00 a.m. He said there is a $5 charge for spectators at the gate and a $25 entry charge for racers.
