If you have received the latest copy of RidersWest, chances are, you have already seen this photo. It was featured on the cover of our Spring 2013 issue. This shot was taken by Steve Shannon while he was travelling from Vernon, B.C., to the Kootenays and back on a weekend trip.
“After a night spent on the shores of Whatshan Lake, this photo was taken on Day 2, traversing Hailstorm Ridge in the Valhalla Mountains,” said Shannon. “It is a self-portrait.”
Shannon was born and raised in Warfield in the West Kootenay region of B.C. His passion for outdoor adventure started at a young age. He bought his first dirt bike when he was 13 years old and was opened up to a whole new world of adventure. Since that early start, he’s competed in numerous races around Western Canada and the U.S., as well as overseas in Chile and Greece at the International Six Days Enduro—an event that is known as the “motorcycle Olympics.”
During these overseas trips, Shannon’s interest in photography really took hold, and after shooting the Red Bull Romaniacs, he realized that his passions could turn into a career. These days, Shannon can be found exploring the backroads of B.C. on his Husaberg FE390 and capturing images of his adventures in the mountains. He currently resides in Revelstoke, B.C.
