Crowsnest Pass
ATV in the Pass
There are many trails to explore
Sitting in the southwest corner of Alberta is the gorgeous Crowsnest Pass. This area, known for its rugged natural beauty, is becoming the hub of ATV activity for southern Alberta.

“The Crowsnest Pass area is about the only place that most of the south half of the province of Alberta can ride,” said Glen French, president of the Crowsnest Pass Quad Squad. “It is one of the few places left that you can enjoy all accesses to the mountains and all the features of the mountain ranges.”
French estimates that over 100,000 people take advantage of the extensive trail system in the Crowsnest each year. With so many people riding in the area, the Quad Squad is committed to making sure the trail system is well maintained. It takes a lot of work and many volunteer hours to ensure the 2,000-plus kilometres of trails are in top shape.
The club is dedicated to upgrading the creek crossings on all the trails in the area. In 2006, club members put in nine new steel-framed bridges and they intend to do more this year.
“We don’t plan on going back to these for a few years,” said French. “We used to use timber on the crossings, but every five years you had to go back and replace them. We’ve been approved to use steel and engineered crossings.”
The club sells a detailed map of the trails on the north side of the highway and has been asked to develop one for the south side as well.
“People like all the regular snowmobile trails,” said French. “They are all multi-use areas and in the summertime people go out on ATVs and run the same trails. In the low elevations you can ride them all year.
“We ask everyone who rides the trails we have done improvements on to join the club. A $30 membership is a pretty cheap day of entertainment, and it helps us maintain the trails.”
